How does a gravity fed water tank work?

3 min read

Asked by: Elizabeth Page

In gravity-fed systems, a cold water tank sits high up in the property somewhere. A pump hauls water up the roof from the mains supply, and then the tank releases water through outlets in its base.

What is gravity fed water supply system?

The gravity fed water system is used to pull the water from springs, streams, creeks, rain barrels, and rivers upstream or uphill from the water source. You can use this system to provide water to your shower, gardens, animal barns, and even your whole house if you have it set up properly.

How high should gravity fed water be?

The height of the water tank should be a minimum of 2-meters head, however Martin Smith personally recommends the water pressure to be a minimum of 3-meters head in gravity fed water pressure and the higher the tank, the more gravity fed water pressure that will come through your taps.

How do gravity water systems work?

If the both ends of the pipe are submerged and air is removed at the high point (primed), atmospheric pressure on the supply water surface will move water up the pipe to the high point (if this point is set at an appropriate elevation) and gravity will move the water from there down to the delivery point.

What is gravity supply system?

Gravity system of water supply is that system in which water flows under gravity without use of any external energy to deliver water from source to tap stand.

What type of shower do I need for a gravity fed system?

Low pressure showers
They are also known as vented systems. The benefits of a gravity system are that they are compatible with any shower in our range, including mixer, digital, electric and power showers. This is the only system suitable for a power shower.

How do you increase water pressure in gravity fed?

If your cold water tank is not in the loft space and is in a cupboard instead, you can increase your home’s water pressure by moving the cold water tank to a high position. This gives the water further to fall, which will increase the flow and pressure of the water through the pipes.

Can you fit a pump to a gravity fed system?

Conventional Gravity Fed System
A gravity fed system will consist of a large cold water storage tank in the roof or loft and a hot water cylinder in an airing cupboard. If you have a conventional gravity fed system, you will be able to fit a shower pump.

Can gravity push water uphill?

Earth’s gravity is strong, but can water ever naturally go against it and flow uphill? The answer is yes, if the parameters are right. For instance, a wave on a beach can flow uphill, even if it’s for just a moment.
