To keep lugworm in top condition for longer periods they can be kept in the fridge in trays containing a few millimetres of seawater (the exact same way in which ragworm are stored). As long as the water is changed every other day (with refrigerated seawater), they should live for a week or possibly longer.

Worms stored like this in the fridge should last up to a week. If you have a seperate fridge,you can use trays such as cat litter trays and store them in shallow sea water hardly covering the worms, but you must change the water every day or two.

Black lugworms can be frozen. Most anglers cut the first few millimetres of the tip of the worm off, and then squeeze out the guts. The gutted worm can then be rolled up in clingfilm in batches of five or ten and placed in the freezer.
