Why are my front brakes not releasing?

The most common causes of your brakes not releasing is a seized caliper or brake pad. This typically occurs due to rusting or ageing. Typically, you will notice your vehicle pulling to one side when you press down on your brakes.

What would cause both front brakes to lock up?

There is a long list of reasons that one or all of the brakes on your vehicle might lock up. These can include an overheated braking system, using the wrong brake fluid, damaged or broken parts (calipers, brake pads, pistons, rotors, or others), a defective ABS component, broken parking brake, and more.

What causes front brakes to stick?

One of the most common causes of sticking brakes is simple: stuck brake calipers. Most vehicles use disc brakes, which include brake pads, rotors, and calipers. If the brake caliper gets stuck, you’ll notice a sticky sensation in your brakes.

Can a master cylinder cause brakes to lock up?

There could be a problem with the master cylinder. When you push down on the brake pedal, the fluid pressure should be able to get to the brake pads or drum shoes. If the master cylinder valves and seals are not properly in place, the brakes may lock up.

Lubricating the parking brake system should fix that issue, and removing the pads and applying a small amount of grease to the edge should fix skewed pads. Once stuck pads have been freed from a disc, the solution is resurfacing the disc and replacing the pads.
