Eating less calories but still not losing weight, resistance training?

2 min read

Asked by: Leslie Wever

At the most basic level, not reaching your weight loss goal can occur when calorie intake is equal to or higher than calorie use. Try strategies such as mindful eating, keeping a food diary, eating more protein, and doing strength exercises.

Why am I not losing weight in a calorie deficit and lifting weights?

Just because you’re eating less than you were before doesn’t mean you’ll definitely lose weight. Calorie balance is about calories in AND calories out. If you eat less, but you do less activity as well, your weight could stay the same or even increase.

Is it normal to not lose weight when strength training?

If you’re building muscle but not losing weight, then your body is undergoing a process commonly known as body recomposition. This is a coveted state that is ideal for maintaining fat loss. According to the Mayo Clinic, strength training can help you reduce your body fat while increasing your lean muscle.

Does resistance training slow weight loss?

Resistance training helps with excess fat loss by increasing both after-burn after exercise, and by increasing muscle size, thereby increasing the number of calories we burn at rest.

Why is my calorie deficit not working?

Metabolic Adaptation

A major reason why people’s fat loss comes to halt even when they’re eating in a calorie deficit is simply due to the adaptive component of the metabolism.

Why am I gaining weight while dieting and exercising?

Glycogen or sugar that your muscle cells convert to glucose is the energy source for your muscles. When you exercise regularly, your body stores more glycogen to fuel that exercise. Stored in water, glycogen has to bind with water as part of the process to fuel the muscle. That water adds a small amount of weight, too.

Can you be in a calorie deficit and not lose weight?

To lose weight, you need to eat and drink fewer calories than you burn. That’s called a calorie deficit. If you take in more than calories than you burn, then you don’t have a calorie deficit and you won’t lose weight.
