Ease of servicing brifters

Are Brifters reliable?
They are all extremely reliable. I would say that in my experience there is MORE maintenance required of the shift levers (Bar end and downtube) and less on the brifters. This is because the friction adjustments need a little tweek at the beginning of winter and spring for me.
What are Brifters?
On road bikes, the shifters and brakes are usually integrated into one unit. There are slightly different variations on the design, but this is by far the most common design on modern drop-bar bikes. They are sometimes referred to as “brifters”. The best mountain bikes (and the best hybrid bikes) use flat-bar shifters.
What are bar end shifters?
What are bar end shifters? These are gear shifters that sit at the end of your bars, whether that’s drop or straight bars. They have levers that you click one way to shift up and one way to shift down, so are also indexed. Each hand controls a different derailleur.
How do you shift with Brifters?
Quote from video: So with the big lever you will be changing into a larger sprocket or a larger chain ring depending on whether you using your right hand shifter we were left-hand shifter then the smaller lever.
What does STI stand for bike?
Shimano Total Integration
When Shimano launched its STI (Shimano Total Integration) system, it did much more than just relocate and streamline the gear levers — it completely changed how people rode and raced bikes.
What does sti mean in road bike?
Dual Control or Shimano Total Integration (STI) is Shimano’s name for the integrated brake and gear shifter lever. The Shimano shifter system works by moving the whole brake lever to change gear in one direction, and using a smaller integrated lever inside the main brake lever to change in the other direction.
Are bar end shifters any good?
When compared with integrated brake/shift levers they are inexpensive, simple and reliable; all prized traits in touring gear. For my money, they’re the flat-out best shifter for a drop-bar touring bike.
Do friction shifters click?
They only move your derailleur exactly as much as you push the shifter, not telling you when the derailleur is in the right spot. Since there are no pre-set “clicks” or set amount of distance for the derailleur to move, it also means friction shifters are compatible with any amount of gears.
Are friction shifters good?
Conclusion: – Using friction shifters will dramatically reduce the chance of shifter failure on a bike tour. It is simple and easy to change gears and also just as simple and easy to tune.
What does STI means Shimano?
Shimano Total Integration
Shimano Total Integration (STI) is a gearshift system designed by Shimano for racing bicycles. It combines the braking and gear shifting controls into the same component. This allows shifting gears without having to remove a hand from the bars, unlike previous down tube shifting systems.
When was Shimano STI invented?
1990
Launched in 1990, the ‘Shimano Total Integration’ (STI) shifters totally changed the face of cycling. It combined the braking- and shifting controls into the same component, creating the iconic dual-control levers on the handlebar that we are now all so familiar with.
How do you fix a STI shifter?
Quote from video: If you have an ultrasonic cleaner you can go ahead and put that put the whole thing in there and clean that and it'll clean out then you get to remove it and everything.
How do you shift bar end shifters?
Quote from video: The web between my thumb and my forefinger is right across the end of the handlebar. Here creates a nice leverage point. And allows me to use my fourth. And fifth fingers to do all the gear shifting.
How do you adjust bar end shifters?
Quote from video: Turn the barrel adjuster counterclockwise to add tension. And clockwise to release. It. If the front derailleur is slow to shift to a bigger chain ring add tension.
How do downtube shifters work?
Lever or Downtube Shifters
The right one shifts the rear derailleur and the left, the front. Pulling the left, or front, lever backwards tightens the cable and pushes the chain up to a bigger front chainring. To shift down, simply push the lever in the opposite direction.

Who invented STI shifters?
Keizo Shimano
STI levers looked different to the paltry brake hoods on most riders’ bikes. But the revolution lived inside. Keizo Shimano had devised a ratcheting system that allowed precise shifts between gears — the next evolution in indexed shifting. The system featured two paddles, one of which was the brake lever itself.
