Does epoxy stick to urethane?

Asked by: Nicole Smith
Epoxy and Polyurethane substrates bond well to each other as long as the surfaces are clean and slightly abraded. As a note of caution, because epoxy and urethane parts are usually contaminated with traces of mould release, all mould release residue must be removed from the surfaces to obtain a strong bond.
Can I apply epoxy over water-based polyurethane?
We do not recommend applying epoxy over water-based polyurethane. The epoxy could cause the water-based polyurethane to wrinkle or soften. Epoxy does not stick very well to water-based polyurethanes and you could end up with fisheyes (epoxy pushing away from the surface).
What materials does epoxy not bond well with?
Here are a few well-known materials that epoxy resin doesn’t stick to:
- Parchment or Wax Paper.
- Sheathing or Tuck Tape.
- Silicone, Vinyl or Rubber.
- Hot glue.
- Plastic, Sandwich Bags.
- Most Plastic Containers.
- Polyethylene Plastics.
Will epoxy stick to gloss spray paint?
epoxy resin takes spray paint art to a whole new level, sealing and protecting it with a professional looking finish and a glossy sheen.
Will epoxy resin bond to polyurethane?
Epoxy and Polyurethane compounds are thermoset plastics. Epoxy and Polyurethane substrates bond well to each other as long as the surfaces are clean and slightly abraded.
What can you put over polyurethane?
While polyurethane is a designated topcoat for woods and other projects, it is perfectly possible to paint over it. Nearly every paint type should work, but acrylic and oil-based paints provide the best results of painting over poly. The important part of painting over polyurethane is the surface preparation.
Is there anything epoxy won’t stick to?
Plastic cups, bowls and Tupperware and other plastic items are perfect, as they do not stick to epoxy. Plastic containers are affordable, simple, and available in the house. This works effectively for woodturning with a large bowl. Additionally, it goes well for different shapes and paperweights.
What will epoxy resin stick to?
Epoxy resin adhesives will bond all woods, aluminum and glass well. It does not bond to Teflon, polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon, or Mylar. It bonds poorly to polyvinyl chloride, acrylic and polycarbonate plastics. The only way to tell if an epoxy will bond to a material is to try it.
