Different tire and rim widths front and back – Why? Should I replace one?

Does tire width have to match rim width?
For your safety, and for the optimal ride, your rim width and tire size must be compatible. Why? Because the rim width has a direct impact on your tire’s contact patch, which changes how the tire interacts with the road and how your vehicle handles.
Is it better to have bigger wheels on the front or back?
Advantages of larger rear wheels in an RWD car? Having a larger diameter rear wheel increases the amount of rubber that contacts the road along the axis of the vehicle which increases your acceleration potential. When you accelerate, much of your vehicle’s weight shifts to the rear.
Can I put different width tire on my car?
Tires are a part of the wheel setup. For instance, your vehicle has a set size of rims, but you can buy different sizes of tires to fit those rims, as long as the middle of the tires is the correct size.
What happens if the rim is wider than the tire?
The ratio between the section width and the rim width is pretty important. If the rim width is too narrow, you pinch the tire in and cause it to balloon more in cross-section. If the rim width is too wide, you run the risk of the tire ripping away at high speed.
How much wider should tire be than rim?
As a general rule of thumb, it’s safe to fit a tire up to 20 millimeters wider than stock on the original rim. The actual width of the tire will vary depending on the width of the rim: The tire will expand 5 millimeters for every half inch (12.5 millimeters) increase in rim width.
How much difference in tire size is acceptable?
When changing tire sizes, we recommend staying within 3% of the diameter/height of the original tire. Any more than this and you face the risk of brake failure.
Can you have different width tire on front and back?
No matter what type of vehicle you have, having mismatched tires front to back can sometimes cause handling problems. Granted, this really doesn’t happen that often, and it is usually no problem to have different tires on a car.
Can you have different size wheels on front and back?
What happens if wheels are different sizes. In a front- or rear-wheel-drive vehicle, as long as both rear wheels are the same and both front wheels are the same and the suspension geometry is set up to accommodate this, the vehicle will operate fine.
When replacing 2 tires where should they go?
According to Tire Review, new tires should always go in the back. Rear tires provide the vehicle stability, and if they have little tread, then stability is lost.
Can you drive with 2 different size tires?
Having different sizes on some four wheel and all wheel drive vehicles can actually do damage to the vehicle. Since tires vary from brand to brand, and even from model to model, damage can even occur with tires of the same size if they have a large enough difference in circumference.
Do all 4 tires need to be the same brand?
For optimal safety and performance, Continental recommends fitting the same tires to every wheel position on your car, so drivers should have the same brand, size, tread pattern, load index, and speed rating on the front and rear tires.
Can I put 225 tires on 215 rims?
Yes, you can. But only if the rims on your car can accommodate tires that are 10-20 millimeters wider. Bear in mind that wider wheels require more fuel due to their increased rolling resistance. Again, wider tires are more costly than narrower ones because they need more rubber during construction.
Can I put 245 tires on 235 rims?
The quick answer is yes you can replace 245/50-18 tyres with 235/50-18 but they will have 10mm (0.4 in) smaller overall diameter. Will only slightly effect speedo and odometer – ie speedo will read about 1.5% high.
What happens if my tires are too wide?
If you go too wide the tires can wear unevenly. Tires that are too wide for the wheels tend to bulge in the middle of the tread causing them to wear excessively in the middle. Going too wide can also cause clearance issues. The tires can end up rubbing on the fender wells and on suspension components causing damage.
Can you put a narrower tire on the same rim?

Can you put any width tires on same rim bike?
Bicycle wheels can handle a range of different widths, so it’s not absolutely necessary to replace your tires with one with the exact same width. In fact, there are often advantages to using a tire that is a little wider, as long as your bicycle has adequate clearance to handle the larger size.
How wide of a tire can I put on a 8 inch rim?
Equivalency table
Rim width | Minimum tire width | Maximum tire width |
---|---|---|
7,0 Inches | 195 mm | 225 mm |
7,5 Inches | 205 mm | 235 mm |
8,0 Inches | 215 mm | 245 mm |
8,5 Inches | 225 mm | 255 mm |
How wide of a tire can I put on a 7 rim?
usually you should put on 215 or 225 at most on a 7 inch rim.
Does a wider rim make tire wider?
Putting the same tire on a wider rim means the tire keeps the same diameter but gets a bigger width. Here the convention of defining tires by their width rears its ugly head.
Can you have wider tires in the back?
While it’s fine to put narrower tyres on the front and wider on the back, it’s pointless to put wider tyres on just one side of the car. This would change the weight balance and would mean one side of the vehicle would grip differently to the road when braking.
Does rim width affect tire pressure?
Since the tire gets wider with a wider rim, we increase the dimeter in our pressure equation above. This results in a lower tire pressure for a wider rim with the same size tire.
