What can you see at Glacier Point?

Glacier Point, an overlook with a commanding view of Yosemite Valley, Half Dome, Yosemite Falls, and Yosemite’s high country, is accessible by car from approximately late May through October or November. From mid-December through March, cross-country skiers can experience this view after skiing 10.5 miles.

There’s one spot called Darwin’s Curve that gets some attention, but overall most people will not consider the Glacier Point road to be scary. By comparison it’s no worse than other local roads like route 120 (Tioga Pass, Tuolumne Meadows) or route 41 (Wawona, Mariposa Grove).

The Old Big Oak Flat Trailhead is located along Big Oak Flat Road, some 3.7 miles west of the junction with El Portal Road and Yosemite Valley. Once you get to the trailhead, you’ll pick up the path that takes you to the top of El Capitan over approximately 16.4 miles, round trip.

Glacier Point Road will be closed to all traffic in 2022 to rehabilitate and improve the road. The only access to Glacier Point will be via the Four Mile, Panorama, and Pohono Trails, all of which are strenuous hikes. There will be 30-minute delays in 2023.

Can you drive to Glacier Point in Yosemite National Park?

Car: Visitors can access Glacier Point by car starting in late May and lasting through October or November. Drive to the overlook via State Highway 41 and continuing onto Wawona Road. Turn onto Glacier Point Road at the Chinquapin intersection. Total travel time is about an hour from Wawona and Yosemite Valley.

Is there water at Glacier Point?

Water. Drinking water is not available along the trail. When the Glacier Point Snack Stand is open (late May through mid-October), food and beverages are available for purchase at Glacier Point.
