I take few short strokes to prevent scratches. And then I do nice long strokes on the rest of the panel. I also sand the edges. And the end grain. But I work carefully.

How long should tung oil dry before buffing?

Minwax Tung oil takes about 24 hours to dry enough and be ready for recoating. Remember to buff excess product from the surface using a clean, lint-free cloth after about 5-10 minutes of application.

How do you get shiny finish with tung oil?

I rub thoroughly between coats with 0000 steel wool when looking for high gloss. I have done up to 8 coats on a piece. The last couple of coats may be thinned with mineral spirits. You could also wax polish on top of the tung oil to achieve the sheen you want.

Do you sand after tung oil?

Your final coat(s) of Tung oil should be applied full strength. Don’t sand the final coat.

How do you know if tung oil is cured?

The easiest way to tell them apart is to read the application instructions. If they say to wait a certain number of minutes after you put the finish on, and then to wipe up or buff off the excess, it’s a blend. (If you don’t wipe up the extra oil, it will wrinkle and have to be sanded off.)

As the name suggests, the pure tung oil is free of additives and distillates, meaning it doesn’t create a glossy or heavy finish. Pure tung oil dries to a honey color.

How many coats of tung oil should be applied?

We recommend a minimum of four coats, more coats will be required for porous or external surfaces. For best results gently rub with Ultra Fine Steel Wool (Grade 0000) between coats. Leave for a few days before use to allow the Pure Tung Oil to dry fully.

How do you apply a second coat of tung oil?

Apply liberally to a lint-free cloth. And simply wipe into the wood following the direction of the grain.

How long does tung oil finish last?

It’s easy to apply. You simply wipe on a thin coat, allow to dry, and rub in more coats, repeat till you are happy. Reapply over time as necessary. Every six months (or as needed) just dress the guitar with a light coat.

Will tung oil darken wood?

Pure Tung oil won’t darken wood because it has an amber tint (honey-colored). This color often makes the wood grain pop with a warm amber luster. However, dark Tung oil will darken the wood.

Can you clear coat over tung oil?

Yes! You can seal tung oil with polyurethane. Tung oil is a penetrative drying oil, but it doesn’t guarantee a durable waterproof finish. Applying polyurethane varnish over Tung oiled wood will protect the wood further against water damage, scratch, and discoloration.
