What is front derailleur capacity?

A front derailleur’s capacity is simply the difference between the number of teeth on your largest and smallest chain ring. For example if you have a 39/53 chain ring combo, (53 – 39 = 14), you will need a front derailleur with a capacity of 14 teeth or more.

Will a 7 speed front derailleur work with 9 speed?

Yes. A front derailleur marketed as for a 9 speed system will work normally with your 7 speed set up.

Can I use 3 speed front derailleur on 2 speed crank?

Can I adjust a Shimano mountain bike front triple-trigger shifter and front derailleur to work on a double crank? Yes you can, as long as you use a mountain front derailleur. If you were to use a road double front derailleur, the throw would be different and it wouldn’t work.

Can I use a MTB front derailleur on a road bike?

The same logic applies to front Shimano derailleurs, you cannot mix a road (shifter or derailleur) with a MTB (shifter or derailleur) for the exact same reason, even though the chainrings use the same spacing.

Can I use a triple front derailleur on a double?

Condensed Answer: A front derailleur designed for a triple crankset (3x derailleur) can be used in conjunction with a double crankset and effectively function as a 2x derailleur. Proper operation requires adjustments to the limit screws controlling the inward and outward movement of the derailleur’s cage.

What is the difference between double and triple front derailleur?

A “double” front derailer has an inner cage plate that extends down only slightly farther than the outer plate. A “triple” front derailer has an extended inner plate that goes down considerably lower than the outer plate.

Does speed matter for front derailleur?

The number of rear speeds (the 9 in 2×9) marked for a front derailleur isn’t too important, but the cage of the derailleur may be thinner for higher number of rear speeds (so if your chain isn’t designed for high enough speeds, you may have some rubbing on the cage, especially if you don’t adjust it properly) — as

Can you use a 11 speed front derailleur on 8 speed?

No this will not work. At a minimum you will need your chain, cassette, and shifters to be 11 speed. Should change your chainring too really. You can just Google any drivetrain component and there are charts that show you what it’s compatible with.

Do front derailleurs wear out?

That said, derailleur springs will lose tension overtime, and pivots will get sloppier. Shifters can wear out too (if you ride enough), and most cannot be serviced back to health.

What is the difference between high clamp and low clamp front derailleur?

High clamp (aka bottom swing)

On some frames with a consistent seat-tube diameter, the use of a high-clamp or low-clamp front derailleur is completely interchangeable. Generally speaking, the low-clamp type offers greater water bottle cage clearance, a cleaner look, and is a lighter option if it fits your bike.

Are all front derailleurs the same?

There are two different types of braze-on front derailleur interfaces: one is commonly found on road bikes, the other on mountain bikes. The interfaces are different enough that a quick visual inspection should allow you to determine which type of interface you will need.

What is a down swing derailleur?

Down swing/up swing refers to the geometry of the derailleurs swing. An easy way to tell the difference, a bottom (down) swing derailleur has the clamp above the derailleur. This is often referred to as a traditional derailleur as all derailleurs were this way at one time.

Is front derailleur important?

Are Front Derailleurs Necessary? These days front derailleurs are essentially not necessary, on mountain bikes at least. Now even high-end road bikes are starting to lose their front derailleurs. With a larger rear cassette, it’s possible to get the same number of gears without the need for a front derailleur.

Derailleur Alignment & Positioning

Most front derailleurs can be adjusted for height and rotation. If the cage is set too high over the largest ring, it may not perform well. Too high a cage can cause a slow shift, and can allow the chain to shift over the largest ring.
