Everyone has heard of mange in dogs but horses can also develop it too, although not as commonly as dogs. Mange basically means a disease caused by mites, but there are many different types of mites. The most severe type of mange in horses is sarcoptic mange due to the severe itching and scratching it causes.

Is mange contagious in horses?

Sarcoptic mange is highly contagious. Treatment must be thorough and should include all horses and other animals that have been in contact with one another. Your veterinarian will usually prescribe a lime-sulfur solution, to be applied by dip, spray, or sponge.

What does mange look like in horses?

Sarcoptic mange: The most severe form of mange in horses is caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei var equi mite. The first sign is intense itching, followed by crusty lesions, particularly on the head, neck, and shoulders.
