Can gases expand and be compressed?

Can a gas be compressed?

Gas can be compressed much more easily than a liquid or solid. (Think about a diving tank – 600 L of gas is compressed into a 3 L cylinder.) Right now, you are breathing in air – a mixture of gases containing many elements such as oxygen and nitrogen. Water vapour is the gaseous form or state of water.

Can gases be expanded?

In an insulated container gases do not slow down and eventually condense (elastic collisions). The gas molecule do not interact with each other except for colliding with each other. Gases expand to completely fill a container; they would not if they were attracted to each other.

Why can gases expand and be compressed?

There is no space between the individual particles, so they cannot pack together. The kinetic-molecular theory explains why gases are more compressible than either liquids or solids. Gases are compressible because most of the volume of a gas is composed of the large amounts of empty space between the gas particles.
