Can you use an 8-speed chain on a 7-speed bike?

A 7.1 mm wide 8-speed chain* will fit all the other systems (5, 6 and 7-speed ones). Shimano, SRAM and Campagnolo all use the same chain with 8 speeds.

Will 9 speed chain work with 7-speed?

A chain one size narrower than standard rarely presents any problem. Thus, you can use a “9-speed” chain with a 7-speed or 8-speed system, or a “10-speed” chain with a 9-speed system.

How do I know what bike chain to buy?

Add the multiplied chainstay length, the divided number of teeth for the chainring and rear sprocket, and add 1 (or 2.5 cm). The result is the ideal chain length for your bike. For example, you’d add 32.5, 13, 7 and 1 to get 53.5. The length of the chain should be 53.5 inches or 135.89 cm.

What if my bike chain doesn’t have a master link?

Can you use two master links on a chain?

More than one master link should be fine. The only issue I can see with this practice is having a few links of unworn chain inserted into a worn one which might cause problems – not a problem in your specific case as the chain is almost brand new.

How do I know what speed chain I need?

Because the distances between the sprockets vary on different ‘speed’ cassettes (e.g. the gap will be wider on a 9-speed block than on an 11-speed), you need a chain that fits. A chain for an 11-speed transmission will be narrower than one for a 9-speed, etc.

Can I use a 10 speed chain on a 7-speed cassette?

10-speed derailleurs are not compatible with 7-speed cassettes and should not be combined on your bike. You however may be able to make it work if you change the shifters and chains on your bike to 10-speed too, but it’s not advisable to match components of different speeds.

Are 7 8 and 9 speed chains the same?

7, 8, and 9 speed chains have the same inner width, but 9 speed chains have thinner outer plates for a thinner overall chain. So while a 9 speed chain works fine on a 7 or 8 speed drivetrain, it will be a weaker chain that tends to “stretch” faster.

Are 7-speed bikes good?

A 7-speed bike is great for riding on varied terrain, and is especially useful for commuters who want an easier, less sweaty ride to work. 7-speed bikes aren’t as easy to look after as single speeds. There are more moving parts, which need regular TLC, and in the long run could mean more parts to replace.
