Spikes’ Wear and Care
How long will a pair of spikes last? Most spikes should hold up for at least two to three high school seasons (and they generally feel better the more they get used). Distance runners who compete in both cross-country and track can sometimes use the same spikes for all seasons.

Metal spike shoes provide much better lightweight traction on grass or loose dirt than any other type of running shoe.
What are super spikes?

What’s the difference between needle and pyramid spikes?
Needle/Pin

Longer needle spikes (1/4″ or 3/8″) are more common on dirt/grass cross country courses or on cinder tracks, but these lengths are not as common.
Are pyramid or needle spikes better?
Beginning sprinters are better off using pyramid spikes until very good form is achieved because it’s possible to scratch the opposite leg with with spikes if you overpronate on a stride. Needle spikes are used mostly for running on all-weather tracks that have a springy surface.

Needles also have a sharp point, but a thinner cone diameter. Track spikes create traction by penetrating the track surface. Some tracks do not allow pin spikes and limit the length of pyramid spikes to minimize damage to the track. A variation for synthetic tracks is the Christmas Tree spike.
