It’s true that a diet high in fat can lead to weight gain. But it takes more than just limiting high-fat foods to lose weight. You must also watch how many total calories you eat. Remember, extra calories even from fat-free and low-fat foods can get stored in the body as body fat.

How many excess calories are stored as fat?

As little as 10 or 20 calories stored as excess fat each day can lead over decades to obesity. The hormone hypothesis suggests that the only way to prevent this downward spiral from happening, and to reverse it when it does, is to avoid the sugars and carbohydrates that work to raise insulin levels.

Are unused calories stored as fat?

Is there a limit on the storage of fats in the body?

To provide energy for the body, fat from food is broken down into fatty acids. Those that are not immediately needed are stored as triglycerides within your body’s fat cells. Unfortunately, these cells have unlimited capacity for storing fat.

Can excess fat be stored as fat?

Macros — or macronutrients — are your protein, carbs, and fat, and the most important one for fat loss is protein. Calories always count, but you don’t have to count your calories. Tracking should be a temporary educational tool, and even then, it isn’t for everyone. Read more Working It Out here.

Is it better to go over in fat or carbs?

Ultimately, science tells us that carbohydrates are not more fattening than fats; in fact, it would make more sense to eat a few too many carbohydrates than a few too many fats. Indeed, this is what we see when we follow people who over-consume carbohydrates versus fats – they tend to gain a little less body fat.
