Can I use a 9-speed derailleur on a 7-speed cassette? The answer is yes because the rear shift ratio of 9-speed and 7-speed derailleurs is the same if you stay within the same brand.
Can I use 9 speed derailleur on 7 speed cassette?
You’ll be fine. I had a Deore 9-speed rear derailleur with a no-name Shimano 7-speed cassette and worked fine. The only thing is that you may need a bit more adjustment on the derailleur for the first setup because of the change.
Can you use a 9 speed shifter on a 7 speed cassette?
It will work but as JackM. states make sure you limits are adjusted precisely. You also have to decide if you want to risk over shifting on the low gear or high side.
Can you use a 10 speed derailleur on a 7 speed cassette?
No, you cannot. A bike with a 7-speed cassette would also come with a 7-speed shifter and a chain that is compatible with 7-speed cassettes. This will make it impossible for a 10-speed derailleur to work on it. This is because a 7-speed shifter and a 10-speed derailleur have different pull ratios.
Can an 8 speed derailleur work on a 7 speed cassette?
8 speed shifter and cassette, 7 speed derailleur? You’ll be fine. There’s no “probably” about it. 6-, 7- and 8-speed gear is all cross-compatible in terms of chain width.
Can I use 9 speed Rd on 8 speed cassette?
yes you can use the derailer on the 8 speed cassette. The major difference between 8 and 9 speed is indexing. So for an 9 speed cassette you would need 9 speed shifters.
Will 9 speed shifter work with 8 speed cassette?
If your current wheel has a 8 speed cassette a 9 speed cassette will fit. You will need a 9 speed chain. Change the shifter to a 9 speed one (with a 9 speed cassette fitted) and your old “8” speed derailleur will work fine. As others have said a 9 speed shifter won’t work on an 8 speed cassette.
Can I use a 7 speed derailleur on a 6 speed?
It works fine on a 6-speed freewheel.
Will a 7 speed derailleur work on a 6 speed?
Shimano derailleurs marketed as 7, 8, 9 speed (and in addition, 10 speed road), can be interchanged in any of those speed drivetrains.
Can I use any gear shifter?
No, different maker or different model with different number of “speed” shifters have different pull ratio (i.e. the length of cable pulled by a single shift). Usually it’s safe to use different model with same number of gears from the same maker.
How do I change my 7 speed cassette to 9 speed?
Quote from video: Along there thing you cannot update beyond a seven speed cassette.
Can a 10 speed derailleur work on a 8 speed cassette?
You will need a 10 spd rear derailleur to work with a 10 spd cassette, because the spacing is smaller with a 10 spd setup. You will need a 10 speed chain for a 10 speed setup, a 9 speed chain for a 9 speed setup and any 8 speed chain will work on 8-7-6 speed or lower.
What is the difference between short cage and long cage derailleur?
Quote from video: So that cage has had to move right forward. Now the longer the cage the more of a difference in ratio between the smallest and biggest sprockets.
Can I use a 9 speed front derailleur on a 8 speed?
In practice, they are interchangeable. You can use a 9 speed FD on an 8 speed crank.
Can you mix Shimano groupsets?
It is possible to mix and match as long as you get components from the same generation. For example: 9000 Dura Ace, 6800 Ultegra, and 5800 105 are all cross compatible. Each have 11-speeds in the rear, use the same cable pull per shift and use the same front derailleur design.
Are Shimano 8 and 9 speed compatibility?
7-speed Deore DX rear derailleur works with 9-speed cassette.
What is the difference between 8 and 9 speed chain?
7, 8, and 9 speed chains have the same inner width, but 9 speed chains have thinner outer plates for a thinner overall chain. So while a 9 speed chain works fine on a 7 or 8 speed drivetrain, it will be a weaker chain that tends to “stretch” faster.
Are all Shimano 9 speed shifters compatible?
Combining with various RDs:
Shimano shifters, whether for 6, 7, 8, or 9 speeds are compatible with all the Shimano RDs for 6 to 9 speeds, and with Shimano 10 speed road RDs (not with 10 speed MTB RDs).
Can you put a 9 speed cassette on a 10 speed hub?
Condensed Answer: A 9-speed Shimano or SRAM MTB cassette can be installed on a 10-speed Shimano or SRAM MTB hub right away. A 9-speed cassette is wider than a 10-speed road cassette and is therefore too big for 10-speed specific Shimano road hubs.
Are SRAM and Shimano 9 speed cassettes interchangeable?
In some cases, it is possible to run a cassette from a different brand than the rest of your drivetrain. SRAM and Shimano cassettes, on either road or mountain bike, are interchangeable with each other as the spacing is the same between the sprockets.

Can you mix shifters and derailleurs?
In many instances, it is possible to mix different levels of shifters and derailleurs from the same brand (e.g. Dura-Ace/Ultegra/105; Red/Force/Rival; Super Record/Record/Chorus), however it’s not safe to assume that this will always be the case.
