Is braided line good for trolling?

4 min read

Asked by: Alicia Thomas

Trolling with braided line has dramatic advantages. One, it is super simple to let the line out and reel the braided line back in without the immense strain that wire has. Two, you can get away with using much lighter tackle.

Is mono or braid better for trolling?

Mono holds knots better and costs less than braid. It also works better on smaller bait-casting reels because light braid can dig into itself. Florida sailfish and dolphin anglers still use a lot of mono on the troll, and some use it for kite lines because it runs through the clips better.

Should I use braided line for trolling?

Braid is great for trolling but since it has very little stretch we recommend using a wind-on-leader or mono tophsot. We recommend using 30-130Lb braid as backing for trolling reels. Make sure any reel you spool on your trolling reels is spooled on tight!

What is the best line for trolling?

Monofilament is the best line choice for trolling in most situations, but there are times when low stretch lines have the edge. Because low stretch lines are super thin, they enable trolling lures like crankbaits to pick up significantly more depth compared to monofilament lines of the same break strength.

What pound braid should I use for trolling?

This is sixty pound braid it has a thinner diameter than monofilament.

When should you not use braided line?

One disadvantage is when snagged it sometime becomes very difficult to break. Braided line is generally more expensive than monofilament line. Braided line can put more stress on reel parts, rods and line guides causing premature wear and breakage. Braided line may not be the best choice when fishing clear water.

Can fish see braided line?

While there are many benefits to using braided lines, being undetected by fish is not one of them. The braided line offers excellent strength for a thin diameter, casts extremely far, and also does not stretch.

Can walleye see braided line?

Braided line is visible to walleye and is best used for moving baits especially with a fluorocarbon leader. You would never want to fish braid on finesse baits like jigging minnows. Crankbaits and trolling are ideal applications for braid.

What is braided line good for?

Braided lines are durable and more resistant to wear than mono lines. They are also better suited to deep-water fishing as they’re simultaneously thinner and heavier, cutting through the water to reach the bottom faster.

Is braided line better than fluorocarbon?

Today’s anglers use braid for numerous applications — not only for its tensile strength, but because of the way it behaves on the spool, particularly with spinning reels. Braid combats line twist better than mono or fluoro, and if used in lighter pound tests, it will outcast them as well.

Does braid backlash more than mono?

The lack of memory is important as it means no rats’ nests and far less likely a chance of backlash (birds’ nests) when casting with a baitcasting rod. Braid is also more expensive than mono.

Does braided line cast farther?

Braid proved to be the better choice compared to traditional monofilament line in terms of casting distance for both experiments. The first test with a heavier weight showed a 7% advantage to the braid. And the updated test with wet lines that were both newly spooled showed a whopping 30% advantage for the braid.

Can bass See braided line?

Bass will be able to see braided line if you are fishing in clear water or using a finesse technique where bass are afforded more time to analyze your lure. Braid is my favorite type of fishing line for shear strength, durability, and casting distance.

What color braid line is best?

Green when you go to the store there's lots of different colors.
