How much clearance do bike tires need?

We recommend a minimum of 3 mm clearance between your tires and the closest part of your bike. Any less, and you risk having your tire rub under hard acceleration or if the wheel develops a slight wobble.

Can I put road tires on my cyclocross bike?

In all seriousness though, it’s perfectly acceptable to ride your cyclocross bike as a road bike and just use a spare set of wheels with narrower road tires.

Can a cyclocross bike be used as a gravel bike?

The short answer is, yes, you can. Cyclists regularly bring out their cyclocross bike for their favorite gravel road ride, and, in a pinch, a gravel bike will work decently enough on the cyclocross course to get you to the finish line.

Why cyclocross bikes are not suspended?

‘Cross bikes don’t come with suspension because they are not designed to use one. ‘Cross bikes are designed for races that are short, fast and often require the racers to get off to shoulder their bikes over obstacles. For a cushy ride, we just lower the tire pressure.

How is tyre clearance calculated?

Tire clearance is measured with respect to something(s) (by default, the frame in the rear and the fork in the front and the brakes if there are rim brakes; if anything between the frame/fork/brakes and the tire is there, such as fenders, this is included in the set of somethings).

How wide of tires can I put on my bike?

Most road bike frames can accommodate a tire as wide as about 28mm. Cyclocross and touring bikes are generally designed to accommodate wider tires. We recommend 23mm and 25mm wide tires for recreational road cyclists. The 25mm width is nice for long distance riding since it will provide a more comfortable ride.

Are cyclocross bikes as fast as road bikes?

On flat surfaces, a road bike is faster than a cyclocross bike. You can hit speeds of around 55 kph on average while riding a road bike whereas a cyclo-cross bike mostly stays in the range of 48-50 kph. However, of course terrain will have a big impact on the speeds of the two types of bike.

Can you Bikepack on a cyclocross bike?

Don’t let that stop you planning an adventure on your cyclocross bike though, as you can fit most bikepacking bags without any racks or other fixings on the frame.

Which is better cyclocross or gravel?

Most gravel bikes feature a more relaxed geometry than cyclocross bikes, designed for days of riding rather than an hour or so, and for tackling rougher trails. This enhanced emphasis on comfort tends to give a shorter reach and more upright body position.

How much tire clearance do you need gravel?

These bikes have similar tire clearance to a mountain bike. If you’re on the mountain bike end of the gravel spectrum, make sure your gravel bike has clearance for at least a 45 mm tire, whether that’s on a 650b rim or 700c rim. If you’re more of a roadie, 40 mm is plenty.

What tyres do pro cyclists use?

In the past, road bikes used tyres as narrow as 18c, but over time racers have realised that a larger volume/width tyre offers better comfort, grip and even a lower rolling resistance. Whilst just a few years ago most professional cyclists were using 23mm, 25mm tyres are now the standard.

How much clearance do you need for mountain bike tires?

Ideally you want no less than 5mm of clearance at the closest point. The more the better. Less than that is asking for problems. I’m at 1/8″ (3.17mm) now, and just on the center (see pics).

Will 28mm Tyres fit my bike?

Road bike-style commuting bikes might accept a tyre of around 28mm width, often with space for mudguards, but some commuting bikes, and those based on mountain bikes, will take up to a 44mm tyre.

Can you put any width tires on same rim bike?

Bicycle wheels can handle a range of different widths, so it’s not absolutely necessary to replace your tires with one with the exact same width. In fact, there are often advantages to using a tire that is a little wider, as long as your bicycle has adequate clearance to handle the larger size.

What happens if you put a wide tire on a narrow rim?

If the rim width is too narrow, you pinch the tire in and cause it to balloon more in cross-section. If the rim width is too wide, you run the risk of the tire ripping away at high speed. For 50-series tires and above, the rim width is 70% of the tire’s section width, rounded off to the nearest 0.5.

Do wider tires need wider rims?

Wider tires require larger rims, so you’ll need to make sure that your car’s rims are large enough to accommodate them. You’ll also need to take into account the width of your car’s body. If you choose tires that are too wide for your car, they could rub against the body when you turn or drive over bumps.
